5 Recipes Of Healthy And Simple Indian Sour And Savoury Beverages

Today I am going to share few recipes of delicious Indian beverages but how can I be simply sharing just recipes of beverages without any twist! I am sharing my favourites and I am not a sweet tooth, instead I am a salt tooth person and these recipes are all savoury ones and also the sour ones.

         Yes! You just read it right; there are many savoury and sour flavoured beverages in Indian cuisine, which I personally love over all the sweet mocktails and juices or milk shakes, smoothies etc. I also feel there will be many who would prefer savoury drinks over sweet because all sweet beverages are ultimately packed with loads of calories and sugar. These type of savoury drinks are not just delicious and refreshing but also very beneficial because of the used ingredients and no amount of access calories.

These recipes are not just easy to make but they are also capable to thrill the taste buds with their sour and savoury flavour. Instead of wasting more time I must get to the recipes now, I hope after reading this article you must get tempted to try all those recipes you have not tasted yet.

 

1. Savoury Aam Panna (Savoury Unripe Mango Drink):

Savoury aam panna is known for protection from heat during summers as it helps to keep body hydrated and cool. The refreshing taste of aam panna keep the taste buds satisfied for longer and this ensure less consumption of high calorie refreshments.

Ingredients:

This will make for 4 servings.

Unripe mango 1, 5 half glass of water, 3 tablespoonful salt, 4 teaspoonful black salt, 4 teaspoonful roasted cumin seed powder, 2  Green chilli, handful of mint leaves, 3 pinch of sugar (optional).

Method:

1.

Wash and cut the unripe mango and boil it using the water.

2. Let the unripe boiled mango cool down itself at room temperature. Do not strain the boiled mango, instead transfer it will all the water in a blending jar.

3. Add all the other ingredients in the blending jar and turn on the blender and blend till everything is mixed smoothly.

4. Add ice cubes and serve.

Tips:

Adjust the salt according to the sourness of unripe mangoes. Do not skip the black salt as it is suggested to add a different favour. Add sugar if you don’t like plain sour and spicy taste.

 

2. Chhaas (Spiced Savoury Yogurt Drink):

Chhaas is usually made with butter milk but yogurt mixed with adequate amount of water can also be used in place of butter milk. Chhaas is known for its quality to help with digestions when consumed after meals.

Ingredients:

This will make for 4 servings.

1 cup plain sour curd, 3 cups of water, 1 finley crushed green chilli, 1 handful of mint leaves, handful of coriander leaves, 4 teaspoonful roasted cumin seed powder, 2 tablespoon salt, 3 teaspoonful black salt.

Method:

1. Firstly, whisk yogurt to a smooth consistency in a jug or in a pot. Now add 3 cups of water in the whisked yogurt and mix again.

2. finley chop the mint and coriander leaves, you can also use mortar and pestle to crush green chilli and mint leaves and coriander leaves all together.

3. Add roasted cumin seed powder and salts in the yogurt water mix and also add the greens along with crushed green chilli. Now whisk everything again. The Chhaas is ready to be served.

Tips:

You can adjust the quantity of spices and greens according to your taste and you can also add more or less curd to increase or decrease the sourness of Chhaas.

 

3. Jal-Jeera (Spicy Lemon Water):

Jal-jeera is basically famous as a spice flavour mix but this drink can be made with just few spices and lemon juice.

Ingredients:

This will make for 4 servings.

Lemon juice from 2 big lemons, 4 glass of water, 3 Spoon salt, 3 teaspoonful black salt, 4 teaspoon roasted cumin seed powder, 4 teaspoon black pepper powder, 2 teaspoon dried mango powder(optional), 2 teaspoon mint powder(optional).

Method:

1. Take 4 glass of water in a jug.

2. Add lemon juice and all the spices and salt.

3. Mix well and serve with or without ice.

 

4. Rasam (Tomato and Tamarind Drink):

This recipe of savoury drink is very popular in south India and also requires tempering and some preparation. I think this is the sourest one out of all these recipes I have listed here.

Ingredients:

This will make for 4 servings.

1 cup tomato juice, 20 grams of tamarind (Soaked in 1 cup of warm water), 3 glass of water, 4 spoonful salt or according to taste.

For Tempering:

1 teaspoon cumin seeds, 1 teaspoon mustard seeds, 2 garlic cloves crushed, 4 spring curry leaves, 2 dry red chillies, handful of chopped coriander leaves, 1 teaspoon asafoetida, 1 tablespoon oil.

 

Method:

1. Firstly, squeeze out the juice from soaked tamarinds and strain, then mix tamarind and tomato juice with water and add salt.

2. Heat oil in tempering pan and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. When mustard and cumin seed starts to splutter, add dry red chillies, curry leaves, crushed garlic cloves, asafoetida, lastly add coriander leaves and mix with ladle, now immediately add this tempering carefully in the jug of prepared rasam and stir well.

3. Serve rasam in room temperature.

Tips:

1. If you are not so found of tomato flavour, you can skip tomato juice.

2. You can also add some sugar to tame down the sharp sour taste of tamarind.

 

5. Cucumber and Lemon Juice:

This recipe is my experiment, I usually make this during summers and it’s very refreshing and cooling.

Ingredients:

This will make for 4 servings.

1 cucumber, juice from 2 lemons, 4 cups of water, 2 handful of mint leaves, salt to taste (I mostly add 3 tablespoon).

Method:

1. Wash and cut cucumber in small pieces with peel.

2. Transfer cucumbers in a blending jar and add mint leaves and lemon juice along with water, also add salt. Now turn on the blender and blend till smooth.

3. Strain, and serve with ice cubes.

Tips:

Peel the cucumbers if you want to skip the straining.

 

                           All the recipes are simple and suitable for all the sour and savoury lovers. All these savoury drinks are great for a change whenever you get bored with usual mocktails and drinks.
