HOW TO MAKE YELLOW DAL FRY?
Dal or lentil is a rich source of proteins. It is a must in Indian houses. Yellow Dal Fry is a very easy and delicious way of eating dal. This dal fry is delicious to eat with rice or rotis/naans. I often make dal fry with rice for dinner at least once a week. Yellow dal fry is made using toor dal or split pigeon peas with a tempering of onions, garlic, red chilli powder and cumin seeds in desi ghee.
Ingredients:
- Split pigeon pea (toor dal or arhar dal) 1 cup
- Desi Ghee 4 tablespoons (You can also use cooking oil instead of desi ghee if you are too calorie conscious)
- Onion finely chopped 1 medium
- Garlic finely chopped 3-4 cloves
- Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt according to taste
- Dry mango powder (amchoor) 1 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds (jeera) 1 teaspoon
- Red chilli powder (lal mirch) 1/2 teaspoon
Method:
Step 1
Wash the toor dal properly 2-3 times.
Put the dal in pressure cooker with 3 cups of water, turmeric powder and salt according to taste and pressure cook it for 3-4 whistles.
Step 2
Open the cooker. Add dry mango powder to the dal. Now let the dal simmer on low heat for ten minutes.
Step 3
Heat the desi ghee in a kadai or pan. Add the chopped garlic and sauté till golden. Now add cumin seeds. When the cumin seeds begin to change color then add chopped onions and sauté till they are a little golden in color.
Step 4

Add red chilli powder to the mixture and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
Step 6
Add this tempering to the dal. Let it simmer for two minutes and then remove from heat.
